What is Body Doubling?

Did you know that ‘body doubling’ is one of the most effect techniques for motivation, focus and productivity and we now offer 4 weekly sessions with a lovely growing community, as part of The Focus and Thrive Membership.

Body doubling is a productivity trick where you do a task while another person is present, either physically or virtually (Zoom, FaceTime, co-working rooms, even silent study streams).

You’re not working with them on the task. You’re just… not alone.

Why it’s especially good for ADHD

ADHD brains often struggle with self-regulation, not motivation or intelligence. Body doubling helps by:

1. External structure
Another person’s presence acts like an outside “anchor.” It replaces the internal structure that ADHD brains have trouble generating on demand.

2. Gentle accountability
You’re more likely to start and stick with a task when someone else can see you doing it—even if they’re not watching closely and never comment.

3. Reduces overwhelm
Tasks feel less heavy and lonely. That background human presence can calm the nervous system and make starting easier.

4. Boosts focus without pressure
Unlike strict deadlines or supervision, body doubling is low-stakes. No nagging, no judging—just shared existence.

5. Helps with task initiation
For many people with ADHD, starting is the hardest part. Body doubling lowers the activation energy needed to begin.
